If you’re a foodie, there’s an event you may not want to miss, coming up April 13.
The Montrose Center for Arts is hosting its first-ever Chopped food competition, which is sure to be fun for competitors and visitors alike.
The event will feature the chefs of three area resorts: Arrowhead Mountain Lodge, Elk Mountain Resort and the Lodge at Needle Rock.
The three will square off in a cooking competition using produce from local farms and meat from Kinikin Processing, with a People’s Choice Award given for a specialty dish prepared by each chef.
The MCA talked about possibly doing a food event at last year’s annual meeting, said Ann Back, president of the board for the MCA.
“Cuisine is an art, and so how do we take advantage of that?” she said. “How do we not copy other things going on, and create a unique event? And this is what we came up with.”
The format for the event begins laid back, with a meet and greet with the chefs. Each of the lodges will provide their signature dish, which will be judged by everyone in attendance for the People’s Choice. They will also have specialty dishes available at a cost.
Then at 6 p.m., the real competition begins.
The chefs will be given baskets with surprise ingredients and will be timed, putting together dishes for separate courses.
“They will have 20 minutes to make an appetizer, and the judges will be tasting that,” Back said.
They will have 40 minutes to put together a meat entree, which will also be judged.
The MCA plans to have theater-style seating for people to watch the chefs prepare their meals.
Wine pairing will be provided by La Noue DuBois Winery, and beer will be provided by Silver Basin Brewery.
The goal is to raise funds to increase outreach, Back said.
There will also be a silent auction with items like induction cooktops, original Bob DeJulio framed watercolor and more.
The event is $50 per person, including two tokens for beer or wine and a specialty dish.
