Reed thanked Bynum for her work as mayor over the past year, mentioning her leadership on many civic issues.
Notably, Bynum served as mayor while the city invested a record amount of funds into repairing city streets and public roadways and oversaw the city’s negotiations to find and purchase the future site of the city’s new Public Works facility. Bynum also led during the city’s efforts to move into the new City Hall location on Main Street, thereby cementing the city’s commitment to serving the Montrose community from the heart of downtown.
Bynum was elected to City Council in 2018 and has served three terms on council and two terms as mayor.
“Barbara has an amazing knowledge of municipal government and has represented the City of Montrose well while serving on the board of the Colorado Municipal League,” Reed said. “We’re going to miss Barbara and her leadership and wish her well in whatever her next endeavor might be.”
Reed then presented Bynum with the gavel she used while serving as mayor and a plaque commemorating her service on the City Council.
Although city councilors are elected by the public to fill four district seats and an at-large seat, the mayor and mayor pro tem are selected by the council as defined by the City Charter as a home rule municipality under the Colorado Constitution.
Reed was first elected to the council representing District III in 2020 and recently won re-election to another four-year term during the city’s General Municipal Election on April 2.
