Some cleanup and improvements are being conducted at the Pocket Park at 420 E. Main St.
Wednesday, city workers were installing new lights, and graffiti was already removed from the area, as DART plans to use the park for more events in the future.
The Pocket Park is home to a mural, and Michelle Wingfield, DART coordinator, said they are planning to use some of their funds to encourage more murals around the city.
The program hasn’t been officially announced to the public yet, but Wingfield said it will be similar to the city’s facade improvement program.
“There’s a lot of opportunity for new murals around downtown,” she said. “With DART, there have been a lot of leanings toward public art. There’s a lot of interest in it.”
Essentially, DART will be reaching out to downtown businesses to gauge their interest in having murals done.
“If they have an artist already picked out, then they can just use them,” she said.
DART plans to match investments up to $10,000 to help cover the cost of the murals. “That’s a small price to pay for what is really a massive improvement,” Wingfield said.
