This partnership will establish a permanent memorial on city property adjacent to the parking lot at the Montrose Pavilion Event Center to honor veterans and their sacrifices.
“We are honored to partner with the City of Montrose and the Montrose Veterans Memorial Coalition on this important project,” said Commissioner Roger Rash. “The Montrose Veterans Memorial will serve as a lasting tribute to the brave men and women who have served our country. This project will make our community better. We are confident that the Montrose Veterans Memorial will be a place of reflection and inspiration for generations to come.”
Montrose Public Works Director Jim Scheid said the site is located directly west of the Montrose Botanic Gardens and is ideal for several reasons. The site’s unobstructed view of the San Juan mountains, accompanied by the tranquility of the gardens will give visitors an ideal setting to reflect on the selfless service of those who have answered the call to serve in the United State’s armed services.
Site accessibility is another important component in the planning of the memorial, Scheid added. The site will have plenty of public parking and is presently a stop on the local bus service route.
“Montrose, through community-wide partnerships built over many years, has established itself as a welcoming home for veterans from all backgrounds and all branches of service,” Scheid said. “This memorial will be a fine tribute to our community, those who have served to protect the freedoms we enjoy in the United States, and everyone who calls Montrose home.”
The City of Montrose will provide the land for the memorial and oversee the design and construction process. Montrose County will contribute financially to help pay construction costs. The MVMC will be responsible for fundraising and generating community support for the project.
The parties involved are committed to working together to ensure the successful completion of the Montrose Veterans Memorial. The next steps include finalizing the design and securing funding for construction.
“The entire City of Montrose organization is pleased that this project is moving forward after years of planning to make this important memorial a fixture of our community,” Scheid said.
