The Friends of the Black Canyon National Park and Curecanti Recreation Area invite the Montrose community and surrounding areas to a special evening at Pomona Brewing Company on Feb. 8 from 4 to 7 p.m. The event will feature food, fun, and an opportunity for attendees to learn about the organization’s mission, meet new board members, and share ideas for the future of the parks.
The event will also celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Curecanti Recreation Area, established on Feb. 11, 1965.
Founded before the COVID-19 pandemic, Friends of the Black Canyon began as a nonprofit supporting the Black Canyon National Park and Curecanti Recreation Area through volunteer efforts, fundraising, education, conservation, and community engagement. However, like many organizations, it became dormant during the pandemic.
In June 2024, following strong community support and input from a local think tank, the organization was revived with a renewed commitment to preserving and enhancing the national parks.
Community Input Sought
Organizers are encouraging community members to share their stories, ideas, and hopes for the future of the Black Canyon and Curecanti Recreation Area. The parks are seen not only as vital for preserving natural beauty but also as important contributors to the local economy and communities of the Western Slope.
The goals of The Friends of the Black Canyon include:
• Advocating for sustainable use of park resources
• Supporting education and outreach programs for youth and the community
• Strengthening ties between the parks and local economies
How to Get Involved
Community members attending the event can learn about opportunities to support the organization as donors, volunteers, or advocates.
“We are a small but determined organization, and with community support, we’re confident we can make a lasting impact for future generations,” organizers said.
