Concrete work is underway at the future Montrose Veterans Memorial, marking another milestone in the yearslong effort to create a permanent tribute to local veterans.

According to a news release from the Montrose Veterans Memorial Coalition, crews from Alliance Ready Mix and Double A Landscaping poured concrete at the memorial site, 1800 Pavilion Drive, on Wednesday, June 17. The concrete work included forming the bases for features that will be part of the memorial.

“It was like opening presents watching this finally happening,” coalition Chairman J. Bob Brueske said in the release.

Brueske said Alliance Ready Mix and Double A Landscaping are among the memorial’s major in-kind donors and that construction meetings with Stryker Co. will now take place weekly to keep the project moving forward.

The coalition expects construction of the memorial to be completed this fall, when ribbon-cutting and brick-laying ceremonies are planned. Additional information about the project and donation opportunities is available at montrosevmc.org.

The latest construction activity comes about a month after community leaders and veterans gathered at the site for a groundbreaking ceremony that drew more than 100 attendees.

The memorial, being constructed west of the Montrose Botanic Gardens at 1800 Pavilion Drive, is intended to honor veterans from all branches of the U.S. military. The project is a partnership involving the Montrose Veterans Memorial Coalition, the City of Montrose and Montrose County and will feature a restored UH-1 Huey helicopter as its centerpiece.
