Construction is continuing on a major expansion of the City Market south grocery store in Montrose, with local contractor Able Excavation completing site preparation and infrastructure work for the project.

According to a news release from Able Excavation, the project includes a 20,000-square-foot expansion of the grocery store. The company recently completed foundational and utility work, including demolition of the former Cactus Car Wash, installation of new utilities and expansion of the parking lot.

Able Excavation also imported and compacted 10,000 tons of structural fill to create the foundation for the building addition and constructed a new storm drainage and irrigation system to support the expanded facility.

The store manager told the Montrose Business Times that the addition will make City Market South the largest City Market store in Colorado once completed. He said the expansion would make it a “super store.”

City Market’s corporate office did not respond to requests for additional details about the project, including its timeline, cost or plans for the additional space.

“We are proud to have partnered on the City Market expansion, a project that directly benefits the Montrose community,” an Able Excavation representative said in the release.

Able Excavation, which has served Western Colorado for more than 25 years, said the project demonstrates the growing demand for commercial infrastructure improvements in the Montrose area.
