City of Montrose
In the interest of public safety, the City of Montrose Parks Division is closing Buckhorn Lakes, a city-owned park located 15 miles southeast of downtown Montrose, due to the threat of wildfire from the Gold Mountain Fire currently burning in Ouray County.
The park will be closed by noon today, Thursday, July 2, 2026, with Public Works crews installing signs and barricades to prevent the public from accessing the area.
The Gold Mountain Fire has consumed over 18,000 acres in Ouray County and is currently moving towards the north and the east in the direction of Montrose and Gunnison Counties. The Buckhorn Lakes recreation area is under notice of pre-evacuation due to the Gold Mountain Fire.
City of Montrose residents, as well as residents of Montrose County, are advised to follow the Montrose County Office of Emergency Management for updates related to the threat of wildfire in Montrose County. All public information can be found on their webpage.
